Modern Coastal Pool House Design

It's been an unusual summer to say the least here in the Bay Area, with the fires and air quality we've endured over the past few weeks. Our thoughts are with our local communities who have suffered through these devastating events. As the fires start to be contained and the air starts to clear, we are getting a chance to get back out into some California sunshine.

Our modern coastal pool house was the result of an unfortunate incident with a busted waste pipe, but resulted in a stunning transformation of this 500 square foot pool house belonging to a young Los Altos family. Arriving on site for the initial client visit, the space was a shell, with no flooring, walls or ceiling since everything had to be demolished due to damage. Starting with a clean slate provided Alina Halloran Design with the opportunity to create a fresh updated interior and exterior that could lend itself to a future remodel of the main house.

BEFORE AFTER

The clients, a young family of four, wanted the pool house to be a great location for kids, family, and friends to spend time while swimming and relaxing in their yard in the warmer months. The wish list was a kitchen (without cooking capabilities) to prepare and serve snacks and drinks, a full bathroom, and an open concept living space with room for a foosball table. The décor needed to be both kid and water friendly with durability and easy care a “must.” For the color palette, the clients wanted soft blues and taupes that would evoke the ocean and lazy summer days in the sun. Incorporating an open concept wall was also a must and was the starting point for the interior design.

THE KITCHEN

The entire front structure was replaced with a NanaWall window and door system that would allow open access to the front of the pool house. The window, which opens separately from the door, allows for service from the kitchen to the counter. The kitchen utilizes Shinnoki prefabricated oak wood veneer panels and incorporates a number of appliances designed specifically for apartments and small spaces such as the Summit 24" 2-Drawer Refrigerator/Freezer Combo and Hoshizaki Ice Maker for easy entertaining and refreshments. The Bosch Dishwasher we installed sits just under 18", and with 3 racks is a perfectly efficient small appliance for the pool house.

BEFORE AFTER

THE BATHROOM

For the bathroom, we specified Kohler products such as the sleek and refined Composed Tall Single-Handle Faucet atop a James Martin vanity with a prefabricated, integrated sink and counter. The shower was outfitted with the Kohler's Awaken Deluxe Slidebar Handshower and Revel Frameless Shower Door for an added feel of openness and easy of use. We couldn’t resist the playfulness of randomly placed Lunada Bay 3D Countourz tile for the wall. The flooring is a beautiful Terrazzo from Agora Surfaces which reminds us of sandy beaches.

THE LIVING SPACE

We wanted to create a dual seating / reading nook in the bay window built out with Shinnoki and topped with a comfortable bench seat cushion and pillows. The pillows are a mix of custom made pillows utilizing Kravet and Seema Krish fabrics and ready-made pillows from Jaipur Living. Hardware was sourced from Emtek and Rejuvenation. The solid white oak table along with the playful wood and molded plastic chairs provided a sense of ease and relaxation for this family's time spent together.

THE EXTERIOR

The exterior also involved a revamp with new windows, color palette and removal of some of the more dated stucco elements. The counter is hardy Dekton, in the shade Zenith, which can withstand the elements and will retain its color and finish for many years to come. The color palette was chosen with the idea of using it in conjunction with the main house exterior when the client is ready to update.

Our clients could not have been happier with the outcome and have enjoyed their sun filled, fun space this season.

We wish you all the best as we head into these sunny Fall days!
