It was so much fun to design a comfortable, casual, and contemporary home for a young Mountain View family. A neutral palette with fun pops of color and some truly elegant pieces elevate this design into something timeless!
This 1940's home had not been touched in decades and was a maze of small, interconnected rooms that the homeowners wanted to transform. Central to the new design is the open concept kitchen and dining room that allows a lovely sense of flow from the front of the house. Passing a stairwell to the bedrooms upstairs, a comfortable family room with reading nook leads to the yard beyond through oversized sliding patio doors.
THE KITCHEN + DINING ROOM
Custom cabinetry was built throughout the house to provide ample storage. The kitchen utilizes a warm combination of base cabinets in vertical grain oak with a walnut stain, and uppers finished in Benjamin Moore Simply White, all featuring classic shaker details and satin nickel hardware in a combination of Signature Hardware knobs and pulls. Design Within Reach Contour Stools provide an accent with upholstered seat and back in Robins Egg Ducale Wool.
The custom 12' long oval dining table is perfect for large family gatherings and is complimented with curved upholstered armchairs from Bernhardt providing a softness and balance to the angles of the modern architectural elements. The dining room and family room are open to each other, and the staircase allows for defined spaces, while keeping the sight lines open.
THE LIVING SPACE
In the family room a built in bookshelf, storage unit and reading nook is focused around a large window and central to the design.
Comfort was key in the family room with the priority being extra depth seating and easy care fabrics.
An Annie Selke woven wool rug set the color palette for the room with a geometric pattern in blue accents. Wave patterned drapes can be fully admired behind a low-profiled, plush sofa from Medley with plenty of custom pillows in orange, green, cream and ochre which reinforce the soft and muted color palette. A set of Brownstone Furniture teak and bronze framed nesting tables complete a comfortable, yet durable and functional family room.
We love designing bathrooms and this project gave us ample opportunity to be creative! We were able to mix up the color palette, add in a dash of color, paint some cabinets, add some wallpaper and mount some porcelain slab across four different bathrooms.
In the kids bathroom, we aded a dash of playful color with Benjamin Moore Dragonfly - the perfect foil for crisp white subway tile and quartz counter tops.
This beautiful blue-green color was repeated in the glass niche tile of the shower recess.
In the airy master bathroom we recreated a spa like feeling, with porcelain slab sheathing the shower walls with a striking bookmatched pattern.
The powder room features a gorgeous shimmering wallpaper from Harlequin called Sumi that provides a dash of simple elegance to a small space.
It is always such a joy to work with clients to help them realize their ideas and help them achieve the home they have been dreaming of. Especially in these times of shelter in place, having a comfortable and cozy home has become more important than ever before. A place to connect, share and play together.
